Archangels are powerful celestial beings, the chief messengers of God to human beings. The “el” suffix of most archangels’ names literally means “in God.”
Archangels existed before humankind did. They live in both the heavenly realms and the earthly sphere and are easy for people to access. For many, it is easy to hear and feel their presence. The main purpose of archangels is to bring peace to earth, as we are reminded every Christmas season. And, peace begins within each individual person. When we live with feelings of discord and unpeacefulness, no matter what the origin, peace on earth is not possible.
Each archangel has a specialty, representing an aspect of God. Just as each chakra has its own specific energetic focus, so do the archangels. For example, Raphael literally means “healing in God.” And, Raphael is the archangel connected with the heart chakra, the energy center of unconditional love and healing.
Although archangels always have our best interests at heart, they do not impose their will upon us, even when it is for our greater good. We always need to give them permission to guide us, or protect us. There is no best way to ask for the archangels’ intervention in our lives. It can be in the form of a prayer, cry for help, wish, visualization, affirmation, or a thought.
Some people question how many archangels there are. Several references state there are seven (and the number seven shows up in many other spiritual contexts too). In the Book of Revelations in the Bible, it states there are seven archangels. In the Book of Tobit, Raphael states he is one of seven angels. Gnostics also believed there were seven. However, it is not always the same seven angels! Doreen Virtue, the Angel Therapy author, has connected with 15 archangels in her work. She states there are actually legions of archangels.
No matter what the number, the true purpose of Archangels in our lives does not change. They are here to assist us to grow in peace and love.
